If you are one of 100 million Americans who suffer from gum disease or gum imperfections, you don’t have to settle for a less than perfect smile. Advances in dentistry have made dental surgeries less painful, so now even the most anxious patient can improve his or her appearance. In fact, scientists have actually managed to grow teeth-like structures in petri dishes using stem cells derived urine cells. Typically the two don’t mix, and until researchers can actually grow new, functional human teeth altogether, it’s best to be aware of some of the high-end dental treatments currently available.

Laser Periodontal Surgery

If your dentist has told you that you have gum disease or periodontists, ignoring the problem isn’t an option. Gum disease starts as gingivitis, a condition that causes red, inflamed and bleeding gums. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to serious consequences, including bone damage and lost teeth.

You may worry that you’ll need painful surgeries to correct the problem. Laser periodontal surgery doesn’t cut into the gums or require sutures, so much of the pain associated with periodontal surgery is eliminated. The procedure begins with a local anesthetic. Then, the dentist determines how deep the gum pockets are. The laser is used to disinfect the tooth and then remove the inflamed tissue.

Gum Graft Surgery

If your teeth look too long, periodontal plastic surgery may be right for you. Many people suffer from receding gums or exposed roots from gingivitis. A gum graft can correct this problem and improve the appearance of your smile. This procedure involves taking gum tissue from the roof of your mouth or from a donor. The periodontist attaches the tissue so that it covers the exposed root, creating an even line. In addition to improving your appearance, this procedure prevents bone loss and gum recession. You also may notice a decrease in tooth sensitivity.

Some patients have teeth that look too short. If you have a smile that shows too much of your gums, your periodontist can perform a dental crown lengthening procedure. Your periodontist will change the appearance of your teeth by removing and reshaping excess gum and bone tissue. The dentist will begin the procedure by administering local anesthetic. Then, the dentist will cut into the gum and pull it away. Any excess gum and bone tissue will be removed. After the tissue has been removed, the dentist will wash the gums and close the cuts. Dental crown lengthening may be required before other procedures, such as tooth restoration.

Don’t settle for unhealthy teeth and an unattractive smile. Dental procedures performed by a trained dentist or periodontist can improve the look of your teeth and gums, while providing a foundation for long-term health. You should make sure you are happy with your dentist, be it  from small town Austin Dental practitioners to slick New York oral health specialists the choice now is varied and with the cost involved it
