Tal Avitzur, a math professor, has an atypical hobby – he collects scrap metal parts and transmutes them into amazing works of art; amazingly creative static robot-looking sculptures, many of whom are inspired from popular science fiction. Thus, one can find in Avitzur’s work classic robots like Robby from Forbidden Planet, Gort from The Day The Earth Stood Still or Star Wars inspired bots.
Most of the time, however, Avitzur creative process revolves around the actual parts he has at hand. Thus, anything from a shure microphone, to safety lights, to a fire alarm handle – the kind of things we most of us view as junk – have found a new purpose as vital parts in Avitzur’s sculptures. By adding some LEDs, the artist even added a flavor of livelihood.
“The parts I choose to collect for my projects (from the thousands at the scrap yard) evoke a body part for a robot, most likely from my preconceived ideas based on the books and movies from my childhood,” said Avitzur for Singularity Hub.
Indeed there’s a deep vintage feel revolving around Avitzur’s sculptures – a few of them are sampled below. Only a small portion, though. On his website’s gallery, he lists a myriad of amazing models, which I highly recommend you visit.
